What to do in Ghana this December?

December is approaching, and you're contemplating what to do for Christmas break... Should you stay home, and save up for maybe next year? Or should you get that ticket to spend a memorable #DettyDecember in Ghana? The one time where different parts of the world comes together in Ghana for a good time.

Well if you're looking for the latter, and you're travelling to Ghana from Canada, your favorite guide has your back with some Ghana activities to do this December. I will give you a breakdown of some of the things I've done, so you won't be lost like I once was!

#1 Explore Aburi

If you're a thrill-seeker or you simply like adventures,

Aburi is a great place to explore!

Chenku Waterfalls

Adventure scale: 80/100

Pros: Aside from its' breath-taking beauty, canoeing was definitely a highlight at the Chenku Waterfalls! Though we were definitely on the verge of tipping over, canoeing through these falls was loads of fun! Hopefully you can tell from the expressions on our faces (second picture).

Cons: The beach itself was not super clean, but with a pair of slides/closed shoes, it was totally fine. Also, not really a con more of a warning - the stepping stones to get down there can get super slippery at the bottom, so watch out for that.

Entry price: 10 Ghana cedis → 0.97 Canadian dollar (what a bargain!)

Aburi Botanical Garden

Adventure scale: 75/100

Pros: Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Honestly, if you love being in nature and around plants, this is the place for you! Not only is the scenery amazing but the air quality is super refreshing, and the environment itself is relaxing due to all the trees. Cool fact: the garden was built in 1890, according to our tour guide.

Cons: Though the scenery is gorgeous, and there are a lot of different plants to see. I wouldn't say this place is super adventurous, it was moreso informative. Also, some may describe it more as a park than a botanical garden (but that's pretty subjective).

Entry price: 10 Ghana cedis → 0.97 Canadian dollar (again, such a bargain!)

#2 Go to Afrochella

Pros: Amazing experience, got to listen to a bunch of my favorite artists and new artists as well. Also, for the most part, the crowd was definitely not dry, which I find makes events a lot more fun. You could feel the crowd's energy and positivity. It was exhilarating to be a part of it.

Cons: Hm... Where do I start? Okay, so first of all, finding parking was a sport itself. It took us over an hour to find a parking spot (so come early, if you can!). Then getting into the event itself was a huge mess. Not only did we not know where exactly the entrance was, but due to poor management, people were elbow-to-elbow and were all rushing to get in (including VIP). I'm quite short in size so I had to pry myself out of that situation (yeah, I would suggest you either come really early or wait for the queues to clear up). Those who purchased really expensive VIP tickets, basically paid for nothing. Most of them had to queue with general admissions, and also, their sections had a bunch of people from general admissions as well. Also, the food and drinks were pretty expensive. Lastly, one of the biggest acts of the night, Wizkid, came super late.

Entry price:

General Admissions: $136.80 USD

VIP: $252.30 USD

PVO New Year's Eve Party: $79.05 USD

Dates: 28th - 29th December, 2022

#4 Eat, eat, and eat some more

Baked

Bethel House, Boundary Rd, Accra, Ghana

Pros: The place itself was really aesthetically pleasing, and a really pretty place to take "Insta pics". I have heard their milkshakes and drinks are amazing!

Cons: The deserts were okay, just way too sweet in my opinion (this one's a little subjective)

Price Range: $$

Afrikiko Leisure

1st Csir Cl, Accra, Ghana

Pros: The vibes, ambience, and music were top tier. It was really fun, especially if you go in a group! The food was also pretty good.

Cons: It took quite a while to get our food, but ehh the ambience made up for it.

Price Range: $$

Villagio Skybar 25

N 16 N Airport Rd, Accra, Ghana

Pros: A really great ambience as well, the skybar view is breath-taking as you get to see a good view of Accra. Would definitely recommend coming at night, that's when most of the performances happen.

Cons: Expensiveeeeee, and gets really crowded.

Price Range: $$$
